From the deck of Bears Cove Beach House you can view two of the islands in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America.

You can tour the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve with local boat tours or sea kayak rentals. You'll experience seabirds diving and soaring, and whales breaching.

Our properties are located 200 yards from the East Coast Trail. The 220 km Trail traces the scenic shores of the Avalon Peninsula from Fort Amherst in St. John's to Cappahayden on the southern shore.

Within 30 Minutes

Discover one of the oldest cities in North America. St. John's is cradled in a harbour surrounded by hills running down to the ocean. Its charming streetscapes and sites steeped in history have given it the name 'The City of Legends'.

There are several challenging public 18 hole golf courses, two of which are championship courses.

From the 18th Century to the Second World War, Signal Hill was the site of harbour defense. It was also the reception point of the first wireless signal by Marconi in 1901.

Cape Spear National Historic Site is the most easterly point in North America. The Cape Spear Lighthouse is the oldest existing lighthouse in Newfoundland.

The Avalon Wilderness Reserve was established to protect the Avalon caribou herd.

Lord Baltimore founded the Colony of Avalon in 1621, and it is now being excavated. The dig takes place from June to October each year and visitors are welcome.

In 1912 the operator at the Cape Race Lighthouse wireless station received the distress signal from the Titanic, which struck an iceberg 400 miles to the southeast.

The Mistaken Point sea-cliffs contain the oldest deep-water marine fossils in the world. It has recently been nominated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Cape St Mary's Ecological Reserve is known primarily for Bird Rock, a sea stack that rises 100 metres from the sea and creates a natural refuge for seabird eggs and chicks. It is the second largest rookery for northern gannets in North America.

Beyond

While we have focused on the Southern Avalon there is so much to see and do in our province. A few attractions of note on the Avalon Peninsula are Hawthorne Cottage, Heart's Content Cable Station or one of many lighthouses. A good place to continue your discovery is at the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism site.
